In this course, we will explore the family unit as a site of conflict, alienation, reconciliation, and identity formation. Some of the questions we will explore in this course include: Who or what do we mean when we refer to “family,” and why? What expectations do we have of family, and how are they formed? What social functions does the concept of family serve? This course is designed to help you reach your full potential as a thinker and a writer. As a student in English 121, you will be required to complete frequent reading and writing assignments, which will include summaries, expository essays, and research papers. You will also develop strategies for persuading audiences and using evidence and sources effectively. Writing and editing exercises will reinforce the skills needed to express your thoughts and ideas clearly in academic writing.
